Log Cabin business is formula for success
Farm businesses from across East Anglia were invited to Suffolk Agricultural Association's first awards dinner. The winner of the 21st Best Alternative Land Enterprise (BALE) competition was revealed at Trinity Park, Ipswich, home of the Suffolk Show.
The event attracted an audience of 230 from across the farming industry. Former show director and Elmswell farmer Peter Over introduced the awards and guest speaker, GU pudding founder James Averdieck, who described how his luxury chocolate dessert business built up a £50m turnover in just eight years.
The BALE award was presented by Jonathan Long, of sponsors, solicitors Ashton KCJ, to Peter Havers of Athelington Hall, near Eye, for his Log Cabin Holidays business.
He was inspired to start the enterprise having seen some upmarket cabins at the Suffolk Show in 2003.
Now he has a site of 11 cabins on the family's 127-hectare farm and also runs a hog roast business and still rears some pigs.
